Vanadium Redox Battery
Vanadium redox batteries are innovative battery technology used for energy storage and conversion. These batteries consist of electrochemical cells and store energy chemically by utilizing different oxidation states of vanadium ions.VRBs offer significant advantages in the field of energy storage.
HOW THE RORO SYSTEM WORKS
Vanadium redox flow batteries(VRBs) operate based on electrochemical reactions that occur during charging and discharging processes. They use vanadium-based electrolytes, consisting of positive and negative solutions, which flow through separate compartments in the electrochemical cell stack. The positive electrolyte contains VO²⁺ ions, while the negative electrolyte contains V³⁺ ions. These electrolytes are circulated through the cell stack, separated by a proton exchange membrane. During charging, the VO²⁺ ions are reduced to VO⁺ ions at the cathode, and the V³⁺ ions are oxidized to V²⁺ ions at the anode. This stores electrical energy as chemical energy. During discharge, the reactions are reversed, converting the chemical energy back to electrical energy. The decoupling of energy and power capacity is a key advantage of VRBs, as they can store large amounts of energy for long durations. In summary, VRBs utilize redox reactions of vanadium ions in a flow electrolyte system, facilitated by a proton exchange membrane, to store and release electrical energy.

KEY BENEFITS
100% Non Flammable
By using aqueous electrolytes and having low reactivity, Vanadium Redox batteries are non-flammable and pose no risk of combustion.
CO2 Reducing
The complete reusability of vanadium and the recycling obtained through system disassembly result in a 30% lower carbon footprint compared to lithium-ion batteries. This means that vanadium batteries have a lower environmental impact.
Durability
VRBs have a lifespan of over 20 years and can undergo approximately 20.000 charge/discharge cycles, compared to solid-state batteries which typically have 4,000-5,000 cycles. Additionally, vanadium redox flow batteries have a 100% discharge capability without damaging battery.
Resource Saving
Vanadium, being a recyclable and reusable element, allows vanadium batteries to effectively utilize resources. This enables a reduction in industrial consumption and promotes more efficient utilization of natural resources. The resource-saving feature of vanadium batteries plays a significant role in achieving sustainability goals and represents an important step towards a more sustainable future in the field of energy storage.
